Maxillary sinus disease

Antrum Highmore or Maxillary sinus is one of the largest paranasal sinuses. The shape of this type of sinus is like a pyramid. It contains three recesses: a zygomatic pointed recess laterally which is surrounded by the bone containing zygomat; an alveolar pointed recess which is surrounded by alveolar process; and infraorbital pointed recess which is surrounded by the inferior orbital space of the maxilla. These types of sinuses are placed under the eyes joining the cheekbones. In this type of sinus the mucus drainage process is totally different. The mucus must move upward through the nasal cavity and only then it can be relieved. This type of drainage process makes this sinus more infectious and irritable. It can result in the pain in the upper jaw and the tooth.

The maxillary sinuses are one of the largest of air sinuses. Their roof is formed by the foundation of the eye socket. This disease can also occur due to lack of oral hygiene. You should take care of your teeth and there should not be any bacteria and germs present in your mouth. The pain in jaw can lead to the cheeks and it can become irresistible. Some doctors also prescribe saline water in order to drain the mucus because mucus becomes the main reason in the swelling of the facial muscles. Care should be taken properly otherwise symptoms might become more and more severe.

What is maxillary sinus?

There are four pairs of sinuses in the facial region near your nose or eyes. They are called Paranasal sinuses. They are maxillary sinuses, frontal sinuses, sphenoid sinuses and ethmoid sinuses. The main function of these sinuses are to maintain air cavity of your skull as well as reduce weight of your skull. Of these the maxillary sinuses is the largest of all paranasal sinuses. Its is also called antrum or high more.

The maxillary sinuses is found in the body of maxilla and has three recesses. They are alveolar recess, a zygomatic recess, and an infraorbital recess. The part of maxillary sinus which is used for drainage is called ostia and the gravity cannot drain the mucus of maxilla when the head is in erect position. The size of the each maxillary sinus varies from skull to skull and even on both the sides of your skull.

What happens in this condition?

The maxillary sinus is vulnerable to bacterial infection which may lead to a problem called sinusitis. The maxillary sinus communicates through an opening into the semilunar hiatus which present on the lateral wall of the nasal cavity.

In maxillary sinus infection the sinuses get dilled with fluid and the whole sinus lining gets inflamed. As a result the person feels some kind of pain in his or her back teeth. This is one of the common symptoms of maxillary sinus infection. The other signs and symptoms of maxillary sinuses include headache, pain in the facial area, congestion of nose, jaw pain, pain in the ear, and irritation in eyes.

Maxillary Sinusitis can be the result of factors like AIDS, Cystic fibrosis, Allergies, Prolonged orotracheal intubation, Nasotracheal intubation and Nasal polyps.

Allergic sinusitis

Allergic sinusitis is caused by a reaction towards dust, mold, pollen, or another substance in the environment. Some people develop an allergic reaction to harmless fungi that can grow in their sinuses if they have fleshy growths (polyps) or other obstructions in the nose. It causes frequent headache in front portion and periocular pain. In many of the cases symptoms such as fever, illness or post nasal drip does not occur. In these cases patients may complaint other allergic symptoms such as itchy eyes which are an example of conjunctivitis, runny or stuffy nose, dry cough and an itchy throat, hoarseness, wheezing, loss of smell and taste and repeated ear and sinus infections.

It is treated by the use of antihistamines which are taken orally. For example, Guaifenesin is taken by mouth which helps to improve drainage. Moreover steroids which are available in the form of nasal spray are highly effective and they do not cause symptoms like sedation and dry mouth which are generally associated with antihistamines. Some examples of antihistamines are fexofenadine, cetirizine and loratadine. Older antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine and chlorpheniramine should be avoided because it can cause many side effects.

In allergy sinusitis treatment the use of corticosteroid sprays is also done. Moreover there are some medicines in the form of pills which are also helpful in treating this disease. Allergy shots may help. Antifungal drugs which are given in the form of mist treatments may also be of use but are not proven till now.
