After sinus surgery, the patient is taken to the recovery room where a nurse is present to monitor him. The patient usually go home the same day when he fully recovers from the anesthetics. It takes several hours. A family member or friend is needed to accompany the patient from the surgical facility to take home.
After reaching home, patient should take rest with his head elevated on two three pillows. It is done to minimize edema and swelling. He can go out with assistance. Straining should be avoided. If the patient is suffering from constipation, he should be given a stool softener or a gentle laxative. After surgery swelling of nose, upper lip, cheeks or around eyes may persist for several days. There is nothing to worry because this swelling is normal and it goes away gradually. It can be reduced by using ice on the affected areas like face, bridge of nose and eyes. It will help in curing edema and pain. Some patients use frozen vegetables in packages which is used as a convenient ice pack.
Moderate bleeding from nose is normal and it will gradually decrease. Aspirin, aspirin containing medications and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, naprosyn should be strictly avoided for three weeks following surgery. Light food and cool diet should be taken. Hot liquids should be avoided. Occasionally, vomit occurs after sinus surgery. Good balanced diet helps in recovery. It is noteworthy that all the medicines should be taken at regular time and not discontinue without consulting doctor.
