Say Goodbye to Sinus Headaches

Wednesday 9 November 2011 @ 11:00 am

When you get tension headaches, you’re going to have to stop to think of it is really a tension headache or a sinus headache if you’ve never had one before. But, what is a sinus headache? What are ways on how to cure sinus infections and the tension that they cause? Is there a specific treatment for sinus headache problems? First, a sinus headache is head-pains caused by the pressure and congestion from a sinus infection (also known as sinusitis). This is an extremely common symptom of sinus problems and is the key point that separates sinusitis from the common cold or influenza.

Typically speaking, to say goodbye to sinus headaches and pressure, you’re going to have to find a remedy to treat the congestion that has built up. With excess mucous being produced, the use of expectorants and things such as moist heat, you can loosen up the excess gunk that has been lodged in your airways and sinus cavities easily. Once this pressure has subsided, you may be left with a mild headache that can be treated with pain relievers.

Over the counter medications and home remedies are equally as effective against sinus headaches. While most people will rely on things such as Sudafed to get rid of the sinus and head pains, other people like me, would rather use a more natural or homeopathic method to ease the discomfort. The best way to do this that I have found is through the use of herbal oils and neti pot irrigation. The one downside to neti pot use is that it tends to gross most people out. The thought of pouring saline solution and herbal oils into your nasal cavity simply isn’t a pleasant one. But with that said, it works, and it has been proven useful for years.

Sinuses are some small air-filled sacks that have many uses in the human skull. These sinuses are located in the front parts of the human skull around the forehead area, the cheek bones and also around the nose area. The sinuses produce light mucus that usually drains through the nose. Bacteria are always present in the nasal passages and also the nose because they are always open and air passes through them even when it is contaminated. When the sinuses become inflamed, it is usually because of an infection or allergic reaction and the inflammation will cause a lot of discomfort to the infected person which may include sinus headaches.

The mucus that is produced by the sinuses will have no passage to pass through when the sinuses have bee inflamed and blocked and that is what causes all the discomfort. The sinus headaches are usually associated with the deep constant pain that usually occurs in the cheek bones, the bridge of the nose and also the forehead. These headaches usually become worse if the infected person is involved in any movement or straining activity. This is one symptom of the sinus headache but there are so many other symptoms associated with the sinus headache.

The sinus headache is usually accompanied other sinus symptoms which include nasal discharge, fever, facial swelling and a feeling of the ears being full. A fever can occur because of so many health reasons but when it is accompanied by nose discharges and the other symptoms then one is most likely infected with a sinus infection. This can only be determined by a physician and it is therefore advisable to seek professional help when one has these symptoms. The physician will do a medical test on the individual to determine the cause of the headaches and proper treatment will be administered.

It is a misconception that allergies can cause sinus infections and sinus headaches but however, some allergies can cause sinus congestion in some cases. The sinus congestion may lead to headaches which are not caused by a sinus infection. This fact is what most people do not understand but the symptoms are the same making it very confusing. If the allergy is treated, the headaches will not go away because they are not related and they must be treated separately. Headaches caused by sinuses can be treated and cleared in a very short time if the proper medication is prescribed for the infected person by a physician.

A sinus infection usually occurs when the nasal passages are inflamed due to an infection in the sinuses around the skull. In order for an infected person to get rid of the sinus headaches, it is important to take measures that will reduce the sinus inflammation which will effectively reduce the sinus headaches immediately. The first step towards achieving this is getting to know the cause of the sinus infection in the first place.

It is advisable to take some aspirin or acetaminophen if one is over the age of 18 years so as to get fast results when it comes to relieving the pain. Pain usually causes discomfort and when somebody is not comfortable, that person will not function properly therefore it is very important to take care of the pain first. When the sinus headaches occur, it is also important to apply some pressure to the site of your pain using a cloth which is wet with warm water. This will help in relieving the headaches.

One may use extra pillows to elevate his/her head so that the sinuses can drain well when sleeping or even just resting so as to get rid of the sinus headaches fast.

It is also advisable to use decongestants or nasal sprays to try and control the sinus infection that may have infected you. This depends on the type of sinus infection one may have but all the over the counter decongestants may go a long way in clearing the sinus infection. When using nasal sprays, it is advisable not to use them foe more than a few days because they are usually addictive when used for over a week. One should also increase the amount of fluids that he/she consumes in a day which will hydrate the body and reduce the effects of the sinus infection which include the sinus headaches.
