Sinusitis is a common nasal infection that affects numerous people all over the world. The infection is caused by swelling or inflammation of the sinuses. Sinuses are structures that are basically found in the nasal area. The infections to these areas are usually as a result of irritation caused by external factors. These external factors vary in the manner in which they cause the disease. The first and most natural way is through the microorganisms that are found in the environment. These include fungi, bacteria and viruses. These microorganisms will cause sinus infections by clogging the sinuses and causing irritation on these surfaces. Thus the infection will spring from this fact. The various forms of sinusitis will be caused by specific factors. For this reason there are many forms of sinusitis. For instance a form like acute sinusitis is caused by viral infections in the nasal passages, but allergens (substances that trigger allergies) or even pollutants will also bring about acute sinusitis. Infections that are initiated by viruses damage cells in the sinus lining and this is how they cause sinus infections. When these cells are damaged they become inflamed or swelled and the symptoms of sinusitis follow suit.

Medical treatment is a requirement when one has the symptoms of sinusitis or when they are diagnosed with sinusitis. There are many forms of treatment which will depend on the type of sinusitis that the victim has and also the causative agents. However since the disease is conventionally the same there are various forms of treatment. Many physicians will offer sprays with nasal steroids and antibiotics to counter the grave effects that the disease can bring about to a person. These treatments however are not guaranteed to cure or alleviate chronic sinusitis and scientists are still research on methods of treating this.
